Initial trauma and injuries to the brain and spinal cord expand over time. Neuroprotective strategies aim to limit this injury expansion. However, currently we have no way of visualizing the injury expansion. Our lab, in collaboration with Dr. Matt Bruce, is using novel intravital ultrasound imaging to visualize injury expansion in the spinal cord in 4D (3D imaging over time). The goal of this research is to develop novel imaging features that can aid in determining the spatial and temporal evolution of CNS injuries and aid in neuroprotective therapy development.
