Richard L. Winslow is an author, commercial broadcaster, and world traveler who lives on Long Island, New York. He became fascinated with Lake Ronkonkoma—the pivotal setting for much of the action in Terminal Call..
Upon learning of the Lake’s storied and mysterious history, including the disturbing fact that German sailors were openly working and living among civilians in the area in the 1930s, he was driven to write what he considers “The story that must be told.” Many conversations with longtime locals and extensive historical research informed this fictional thriller..
Germans using a short wave station in the woods near the shore, to communicate with their ship located safely in international waters. The latest progress on the secret project at Lake Ronkonkoma is being reported.
German crew manning the amphibious schwimmwagen as they mapped out Lake Ronkonkoma. The secret project began in late 1936 and no one in the Village of Lake Ronkonkoma appeared concerned with the strange goings-on. The locals were told it was a “fish farming” experiment.
Lake Ronkonkoma. Flooding has hidden the secrets under its tranquil surface. Learn whether this was planned.
Emily Biedermeier began working in a small diner at Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island in the late 1930s. Shy and quiet, she met and appeared to fall for Stefan, a German Officer who was working in the waters on a secret project. Was Emily a double-agent?
“Terminal Call” by Richard Winslow is a masterfully written espionage thriller that effortlessly weaves history and fiction, resulting in a captivating tale that had me hooked from start to finish. Set against the backdrop of the enigmatic Lake Ronkonkoma, the story begins in 1937 with the arrival of two covert Gestapo agents and fast-forwards to 1989, introducing us to Gordon and Mona, two characters whose paths cross in a whirlwind of mystery and intrigue. The narrative unravels a chilling conspiracy dating back to World War II, filled with Vatican corruption, active Gestapo agents on American soil, and bone-chilling murders. Winslow brilliantly intertwines the narratives of the past and the present, culminating in a suspenseful ‘Terminal Call’ that threatens to wreak havoc on the City of New York.
The novel’s strength lies in Winslow’s ability to paint vivid pictures with his words, creating an atmospheric setting that adds to the book’s allure. The characters are well-developed and relatable, which kept me invested in their journey throughout. Furthermore, the blend of historical facts, like the existence of a Nazi training camp on American soil, adds a layer of realism that makes the story even more compelling. The author’s engaging writing style makes complex historical contexts accessible and intriguing, creating multiple storylines that made this book impossible to put down. Overall, “Terminal Call” is a riveting read that offers a unique blend of history and thriller, making it a must-read for any fan of the genre. Five stars for this captivating and thought-provoking novel!
The author had me from the first 30 pages. His formation of the characters and detailed descriptions pulled me in even deeper. He brought the sleepy town of Lake Ronkonkoma to life. I was unable to put it down.
Reads as if one is watching a fast-paced movie. An older man returns to the scene of a murder he committed decades before and in so doing exposes even more serious secrets hidden in one lakeside community. Recommended reading for action and plot surprises.
This novel is simply fascinating, captivating and entertaining.
